K vs. Northwood University:
Kalamazoo College opened up it 2005-2006 season with a tough home loss to the visiting Timberwolves of Northwood University. The final score does not accurately tell the story of much improved team play from the '04-'05 campaign which brought the Hornets only 2 wins on the season. If the team continues to play solid up front and can get some improved play from the goalies the Hornets should show strong progress up the ranks of the MCHC.
The Hornets squad shows a great amount of talent with the underclassmen and strong leadership from the upperclassmen. In the game against Northwood there was strong physical play out of forwards Pat Hanlon, a sophomore, and Greg Paddison, a senior. Not to be out done the defenses stepped up their game with the return of three seniors: Eric Larson, Ian Neill, and Dan Yaniglos who have returned from overseas programs determined to make this season a strong one. With inexperience in the net the team will need to rely on strong team play and control of the game allowing the goalies to progress.
The goalies, Mike Ruprich and Mike Schweyen, were peppered early on and struggled the rest of the way. The team toughened up for them through the second and third periods but by then the damage had been done. However, there is a lot to look forward to this season as the team continues to come together and play hard.
K vs. Albion College
Kalamazoo College suffered a rough defeat on the end of blown call by the officials. The missed call led to the goal that broke a 6-6 tie in the third period and game winner.
Early in the game it was back and forth as the first period finished with a Albion College having a 6-4 lead over the Hornets. However, the Hornets bounced back controlling the second period allowing no goals while putting two on the board for the home team. Goal tender Mike Ruprich pulled himself together after a rough first period to shut out the Britons leaving the game a 6-6 tie after two periods of play.
The game played a virtual stalemate through the third when a missed offsides call allowed the Britons an odd-man rush that led to the game winning goal with 8:39 left in the game. The Hornets bounced back putting strong pressure on the Albion goalie but were not able to put the puck in the net to pull even. Leaving the team to look for a little revenge next week in Jackson.

2004-2005 Season

2004: In Review
The first half of the 2004-2005 season has been hard on the Hornets. As was expected, the loss of 12 skaters from last years squad (5 to garduation, and 7 to study abroad) was a hard blow.
But the Hornets remained optomistic, picking up solid freshman skaters in Chris Begeny, Eli Melaas, Pat Hanlon, and sophmore Tom Giltrow. The squad also received a boost as sophomores Alex Guppy, Paul Brozo and Junior Greg Paddison stepped up taking stronger leadership roles.
However, the hopes for a .500 season ended quickly as depth became a serious concern. Lightning fast sophomore Dave Baxter elected not to return for personal reasons and injuries plagued the squad early. Chris Begeny missed a number of games to a partially seperated shoulder, Paul Brozo was pushed out of the line-up indefinately with a concussion, Zach Krug missed 6 games with torn cartilidge in his knee and Michael Shanks will be out the remainder of the season with a broken foot. Not to mention a seemingly endless stream of minor injuries endured by Alex Guppy, Tom Gilrow, Greg Paddison and goaltender Chris Klieman.
This is not to say that there weren't any highlights in the 2004 half of the season. The teams locker room received a much needed face lift and now bears the Kalamazoo Balck and Orange colors. Additions to the staff were made with individuals taking roles as acting General Manager and team Trainer. Not to mention that the Hornets, for the third straight year, opened the season with a road win, this time against non-conference opponant Butler University.
The Hornets hope to improve on their record in the 2005 year, with 6 games remaining. Begeny and Klug will be returning to the line-up and the addition of football players Blake McDonald and Matt Jarboe will give the Hornets some much needed depth in the lineup.
