Three Hornets earn Academic All-District honors
Three Kalamazoo College student-athletes, Alex Dombos, Kevin Lodewyk, and Kelsey Hassevoort, were selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Men's and Women's At-Large Teams on Thursday. Selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, Academic All-District honorees advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
Alex Dombos, a senior men's tennis player from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central), earned Academic All-District honors for the third consecutive year. He was selected to the Academic All-America Second Team last year. Dombos was 15-8 primarily at No. 2 and 3 singles this season as the Hornets captured their 74th consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament. Dombos was named All-MIAA for the second consecutive year while also earning the Lawrence Green Award as the league's top student-athlete in men's tennis. Dombos is majoring in physics while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Kevin Lodewyk, a senior men's swimmer from Bay City (Bay City Central), earned Academic All-District honors for the first time as a biology major with a 3.96 GPA. Lodewyk was selected to the All-MIAA team for the second consecutive season after winning league championships in the 200 butterfly and 800 free relay this season. He also finished second in both the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley as the Hornets captured their second consecutive league championship. Lodewyk earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2011 as a member of the Hornets' 400 medley and 200 medley relay teams.
Kelsey Hassevoort, a senior women's tennis player from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected to the Academic All-District Team for the second consecutive year. Hassevoort was named MIAA Most Valuable Player this season while also earning All-MIAA honors for the second time. A biology major with a 4.0 GPA, Hassevoort was also honored with the Karen Caine Award as the league's top student-athlete in women's tennis. She posted a 7-1 conference record at No. 1 singles (9-11 overall) and a 6-2 conference record at No. 1 doubles (8-12 overall) while helping lead the Hornets to a third place finish and a trip to the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

falls in second round of NCAA III Tournament
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team lost 5-2
to No. 21 Mary Washington on Saturday, May 12, ending the Hornets
run in the second round of the NCAA III Tournament.
Mary Washington led 2-1 afer doubles, including a 9-8(6) win
at No. 1 doubles. Steve Hanselman and Peter Rothstein won 9-7
at No. 2 doubles for Kalamazoo. Mark Denenfeld won 6-1, 6-2 at
No. 2 singles to even the match score at 2-2, but the Eagles won
the next three points at Nos. 1, 3, and 5 singles to win the match.
After winning its 74th consecutive MIAA championship, Kalamazoo's
season ends with an overall record of 13-12. Results
Men's Tennis defeats Penn
St.-Behrend in first round of NCAA III Tournament
The men's tennis team defeated Penn St.-Behrend
5-0 in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament in Gambier,
Ohio on Friday. Kalamazoo is now scheduled to face Mary Washington
in the second round in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Kalamazoo swept the three doubles points on Friday before wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles clinched the win. The Hornets had won the first set and were leading in the second set of all four of the unfinished matches as well. Mark Denenfeld and Nate Eddy won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles while Steve Hanselman and Peter Rothstein (No. 2) and David DeSimone and Alex Dombos (No. 3) also won in doubles. Hanselman won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while Rothstein's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles finished the match.
Kalamazoo faces a Mary Washington team currently ranked No. 21
in NCAA Division III. The Eagles are 15-12 overall and winners
of the Capital Athletic Conference regular season and tournament

Jake Hansen selected to All-MIAA Baseball Team
Jake Hansen, a senior first baseman from Northville (Detroit Catholic Central), was selected to the 2012 All-MIAA First Team as announced by the league on Wednesday. Hansen hit .284 in league play with 21 hits in 74 at-bats. He was second in the league with seven doubles while scoring nine runs with six RBIs.
Overall, Hansen hit .301 this season with 34 hits in 113 at-bats. He had 10 doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs.
Hansen finished his career with a .335 batting average, ranking eighth in school history. He finished second in career hits (149), second in doubles (28) and fourth in RBIs (67).
The Kalamazoo College baseball team finished fifth in the MIAA this season while recording the third-highest overall win total (16) in school history.

to face Penn St.-Behrend in first round of NCAA III Tournament
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team will face
Penn St.-Behrend in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament
on Friday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Kenyon College (Ohio). Kalamazoo,
champion of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
regular season and MIAA tournament, enters the field of 43 with
an overall record of 12-11. The Hornets have competed in every
NCAA III Tournament since they began in 1976.
Penn St.-Behrend, winner of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference tournament, has an 8-10 overall record. The Lions are
making their first appearance in the NCAA III Tournament as the
recipient of the AMCC's first automatic bid to the tournament.
The winner of Friday's match will face Mary Washington (15-12)
in the second round on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of that match

Five Men's Tennis players
earn All-MIAA honors
Nate Eddy named Most Valuable Player
Five members of the Kalamazoo College men’s
tennis team earned All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
honors on Saturday, May 5. Highlighting the award winners were
Nate Eddy as MIAA MVP and Alex Dombos as the Dr. Lawrence Green
Award winner based on academic performance.
Nate Eddy, a senior from Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS), was selected
as the league’s most valuable player for the second consecutive
season while being named All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive
season. Eddy posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 5-1 mark
at No. 1 doubles. The MIAA Player of the Week for week three this
season, Eddy finished his career with a 15-1 singles record and
an 18-1 record in doubles.
Alex Dombos, a senior from Kalamazoo (Hackett Catholic Central),
was named to the All-MIAA First Team for the second time while
also earning the league’s Dr. Lawrence Green Award which
is based on academic performance in memory of the late Lawrence
"Doc" Green, physical educator, athletic trainer and
coach at Hope College. Dombos was 6-0 in league play at No. 1-3
singles and 6-0 at No. 2-3 doubles. He was named MIAA Player of
the Week for week seven, and finished his career with a 20-0 record
in singles and 11-1 record in doubles.
Mark Denenfeld, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected
to the All-MIAA First Team for the second time. Denenfeld was
2-0 in league play at No. 2 singles and 5-1 at No. 1 doubles.
He finished with a career record of 13-0 in singles and 14-1 in
doubles.
Mike Korn and Peter Rothstein earned All-MIAA Second Team honors.
A sophomore from Rochester Hills (Birmingham Brother Rice), Korn
was 5-0 in league play at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles and now is 10-0
in his career. Rothstein, a freshman from West Bloomfield (West
Bloomfield HS), was 5-0 at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles and 4-1 at No.
2 doubles.
Kalamazoo College captured its 74th consecutive MIAA championship
with a perfect 6-0 league record. The Hornets proceeded to win
the MIAA Tournament to advance to the NCAA III Championships for
the 30th consecutive year. Kalamazoo expects to find out about
the upcoming regional tournament late Monday evening.
Baseball ends season with
split at Olivet to finish fifth in MIAA
The baseball team completed the 2012 season with
a doubleheader split at Olivet on Saturday, May 5. Kalamazoo scored
twice in the first and twice in the second to take a 4-0 lead
in the opener. Olivet made it 4-1 with a run in the sixth, but
the Hornets added two more runs in the seventh before closing
out the 6-1 win. Kalamazoo had 12 hits in the game led by David
Kamerman, Drew Ordakowski and Brett Thomas with two hits apiece.
Jake Hansen, Marc Zughaib and Alex Crook each had a double. Ordakowski
had two RBIs while also earning the win on the mound. Adam McDowell
picked up his fifth save of the season.
Olivet won the second game, 9-1. The Comets scored three runs
in the first and six in the second while holding Kalamazoo to
just a single run in the second. Alex Crook was 2-for-3 with a
double.
Kalamazoo's win in the first game moved the Hornets into fifth
place in the MIAA. The team's 16 wins is the third highest total

Hassevoort, Silverman earn
All-MIAA Women's Tennis honors
Kalamazoo College’s Kelsey Hassevoort and
Paula Silverman were recognized with All-MIAA honors in women’s
tennis on Friday, May 4.
Hassevoort, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected
as the league’s most valuable player while earning All-MIAA
First Team honors for the second consecutive year. Hassevoort
also earned the Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award, an annual award
instituted in 2007 to honor the former long-term women’s
tennis coach at Adrian College.
Hassevoort had a 7-1 record at No. 1 singles in league play this
season while finishing with a career record of 22-9 in league
play. She was named MIAA Player of the Week during the second
week of this season. Hassevoort also had a 6-2 league record at
No. 1 doubles with Paula Silverman while finishing with a career
record of 19-8 in doubles.
"Kelsey is one of the best tennis players to ever play for
Kalamazoo,” said Head Coach Mark Murphy. “Her dedication
and commitment to her tennis, her education and Kalamazoo College
is never in doubt. These awards are well deserved and indicative
of the goals our players strive for."
Silverman, a senior from Ann Arbor (Huron), was selected to
the All-MIAA Second Team. Silverman posted a league record of
7-1 at No. 2 singles and finished with a career record of 17-8
in league play. She was 6-2 at No. 1 doubles with Hassevoort and
finished with a career record of 15-10 in doubles.
"Paula is one of the best captains I have ever had,”
Murphy said. “She is a great leader and one of the hardest
working student-athletes I have coached. She played No. 6 singles
and No. 3 doubles last yea and worked very hard to lead this team
by moving up to No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. This is a fantastic
and well deserved honor."
"I am very proud of Kelsey and Paula on and off the court.
They are excellent examples of what great young people can achieve
at Kalamazoo College. I can't wait to see what they accomplish
next!"
Men's Tennis defeats Calvin
in MIAA Tournament Championship
The men's tennis team defeated Calvin 5-1 to win
the MIAA Tournament championship on Friday, May 4 at Stowe Stadium.
With the win, Kalamazoo earns the league's automatic bid to the
NCAA III Tournament for the 30th consecutive year.
Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles before winning three singles
matches to finish the match. The Hornets were winning all six
singles matches before Nate Eddy's 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles
sealed the victory. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman won 8-2
at No. 2 doubles while David DeSimone and Alex Dombos also won
8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Dombos won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while
Hanselman won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Kalamazoo expects to find out about its regional matchup from
the NCAA late in the day on Monday, May 7th. Results
Baseball sweeps Olivet in
home finale
The baseball team won both games of a doubleheader
over Olivet, 6-3 and 2-0, in the 2012 home finale at Homer Stryker
Field on Friday, May 4. Kalamazoo trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning
of the opener before Drew Ordakowski's three-run home run put
the Hornets up 4-2. Kalamazoo scored two more runs in the sixth
to make it 6-2. The Comets added a run in the seventh before Tommy
Carion closed out the complete game win. David Kamerman and Eric
Glanz each had a pair of hits in the game while Alex Crook doubled.
In game two, Kalamazoo scored two runs in the third inning and
that was all the Hornets would need as Jake Holloway pitched a
shutout. The Comets had a runner on third base in each of the
first two innings, but did not get past second base over the final
five innings. Mike Murray was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the
Hornets' offensive effort. The two teams conclude the series at
Olivet beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Game

Women's Tennis falls 5-4 in
MIAA Tournament Semifinals
The women's tennis team lost 5-4 to Albion in
the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, May 3.
Kalamazoo led 2-1 after doubles, but Albion came back to win
four of the six singles matches, including two three-setters,
to win the match. Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman won 8-4
at No. 1 doubles while Olivia Bouchard and Kelsey Moran won 9-8(4)
at No. 2 doubles. Bouchard also won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles
while Carrie Foura won 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Results

Hornets to host Calvin on Friday in championship match
The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team defeated
Albion 5-0 in an MIAA Tournament Semifinal match in Stowe Stadium
on Thursday, May 3.
The Hornets swept the three doubles points before wrapping up
the match with two singles victories. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld
won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Peter Rothstein and Steve Hanselman
won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while David DeSimone and Alex Dombos
won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Hanselman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles
while Michael Korn won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Kalamazoo hosts Calvin in the MIAA Tournament championship match
at 4 p.m. on Friday in Stowe Stadium. The tournament winner earns
the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin
finished second in the MIAA during the regular season while Kalamazoo
captured its 74th consecutive championship. The Hornets defeated
Calvin 7-2 for the Knights only conference loss. Results
Baseball drops doubleheader
to Holy Cross
The baseball team lost a pair of non-conference
games to Holy Cross College at home on Tuesday, May 1, losing
4-2 in eight innings in the opener and 7-6 in the second game.
Holy Cross took a 2-1 lead in the third inning of the first game.
Neither team scored until the seventh when the Hornets scored
a run in the bottom half to tie the score at 2-2 and send it into
extra innings. Holy Cross scored two runs in the top of the eighth
and held Kalamazoo scoreless in the bottom half for the win. Holy
Cross had six hits to Kalamazoo's five. The Hornets were aided
by five walks and a hit batter, but left 10 runners on base in
the game. Drew Ordakowski was 2-for-3 with a double. Mike Murray
also had a double.
In the second game, Holy Cross took a 6-0 lead in the top of
the third before Kalamazoo scored a pair of runs in the bottom
half to make it 6-2. The visiting Saints scored another run in
the seventh to go up 7-2. Kalamazoo scored four runs in the bottom
of the seventh to make it 7-6, but the tying run was stranded
on second base with a line out to shortstop that ended the game.
Kalamazoo had 10 hits in the game compared to eight for Holy Cross.
Each team left nine runners on base. Eric Glanz and Mickey Amboyan
both had two hits. Mike McCann had a double while Alex Crook drove
in two runs. The Hornets return to action this Friday, May 4,
hosting Olivet in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Game

Olympic Trials
Kalamazoo College’s Chris Manning qualified
for the 2012 Olympic Trials with a time of 1:04.39 in the 100
Meter Breaststroke at a meet at the University of Indiana on Sunday,

Baseball falls at home to
Trine
The baseball team lost 8-3 and 3-2 to Trine in
Kalamazoo on Sunday, April 29. Trine scored four runs in the first
inning of the opener before taking a 7-0 lead into the fifth.
Kalamazoo scored three runs in the bottom half, but could not
get any closer as Trine finished with the 8-3 win. The visiting
Thunder had 11 hits in the game while Kalamazoo finished with
four. Mike Murray was 2-for-3 for the Hornets.
Trine took a 3-0 lead in game two before Kalamazoo scored in
the second and third innings to make it a 3-2 game. Neither team
scored over the final four innings as Trine held on for the 3-2
win. Mike McCann had a double for Kalamazoo as the Hornets finished
with four hits. Kalamazoo is scheduled to host Holy Cross College
in a non-conference doubleheader at Homer Stryker Field on Tuesday,
May 1 at 2 p.m. Game

Baseball drops doubleheader
at Trine
The baseball team lost a pair of games at Trine,
4-3 and 6-1, on Saturday, April 28. In the opener, Trine's four-run
first inning proved to be enough for the host Thunder. Kalamazoo
scored two runs in the third and one in the fifth, but the Hornets
were unable to tie or pull ahead while leaving seven runners on
base in the game. Kalamazoo had eight hits in the game compared
to six for Trine. Mike Murray, Tim Lynch and Mike McCann each
had two hits. Lynch, Drew Ordakowski and Brett Thomas each had
a double while Thomas drove in a pair of runs.
Kalamazoo scored a run in the top of the first in the second
game, but Trine scored at least one run in five of six innings
to win the second game, 6-1. Kalamazoo was held to three hits
while Trine had eight. Drew Ordakowski and Eric Glanz both doubled
for Kalamazoo while Brett Thomas drove in the Hornets' only run.
The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

Mitch Wilson named head men's
golf coach
Mitch Wilson was introduced as Kalamazoo College’s
head men’s golf coach on April 27, 2012.
Wilson has had a successful golf career and is an active member of the Kalamazoo golf community. He has qualified for several national and state tournaments, including the USGA Mid-Amateur and British Amateur. Wilson has won multiple Greater Kalamazoo Golf Association championships as well as winning several club championships at The Moors Golf Club in Portage.
Wilson was head coach of the Portage Central High School girls golf team from 1999-2003. The Mustangs qualified for the state championships each year and finished second in the state in 2002, earning Wilson Regional Coach of the Year honors.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of the great tradition of Kalamazoo College Athletics, and thankful for the opportunity to help develop the young men that are part of the golf program," Wilson said. "My goal is to continue Kalamazoo College's long-standing tradition of producing outstanding scholar-athletes, and to build a program that will be competitive both within the MIAA and the Midwest." Men's Tennis wins 74th consecutive
MIAA championship
The men's tennis team captured its 74th consecutive
MIAA championship, finishing 6-0 in conference play following
a 9-0 win over Alma on Wednesday, April 25. Kalamazoo swept the
three doubles points before winning all six singles matches in
straight sets. Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Alex Dombos won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Peter Rothstein
won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Kalamazoo will host the league's
No. 4 seed in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals on May 3rd. The tournament
championship will be played at the highest remaining seed on May
