Archery

Merry Lu Jordan '82 - Archery
Inducted October 21, 1989
Arguably the best archer in the 30 year history of archery as an MIAA sport. Jordan had never touched bow until her sophomore year, but nevertheless was the high scorer at the league tournament in 1980 and 1981.

Robert Black '26 - Football, Basketball, Baseball
Inducted October 21, 1989
Black won a total of 12 varsity letters, possibly the most ever awarded to a Kalamazoo College athlete. The captain of the 1925 football team was a triple threat on the gridiron, often called upon to pass, punt, or carry the ball on any given play.

Mike Casteel '22 - Football, Baseball, Track
Inducted October 22, 1988
Won twelve letters in three sports during his career. Led the football team to MIAA championships in 1916, 1919, and 1921, and was ALL-MIAA at quarterback three times. The shortstop on three MIAA champion baseball teams, he also helped Kalamazoo to four MIAA track titles. Went on to an outstanding football coaching career.

Four-year basketball player, leading scorer in 1922 and 1923. Played on MIAA basketball championship teams of 1921, 1922, and 1923. Selected to MIAA Hall of Fame in 1923. Played baseball for three years, including MIAA championship team of 1923. Holland High School coach from 1923-31. Hope College football and basketball coach, winning or tying for 14 combined MIAA titles, Athletic Director.

Bertram K. "Scotty" MacGregor '19 - Football, Basketball, Baseball
Inducted October 17,1987
Starting halfback for the undefeated football team of 1916. Scored 16 touchdowns and kicked 33 extra points for 129 points, a College record. Led Kalamazoo to two football championships, four basketball championships, and two baseball championships.

John C. Persons '64 - Baseball, Football
Inducted October 17, 1987
Named to the ALL-MIAA baseball team four times, the only player in league history to be so honored. MVP of the baseball team three times. Led the league in hitting in 1961. In football, he twice led the league in receptions. Also lettered in golf.

Set MIAA single-season records in baseball for innings pitched (80) and most decisions (8). Also lettered in football. Later served as Kalamazoo's head baseball coach.

Inducted October 30, 1992
All-MIAA in football in 1950 and 1951, Led the nation (small colleges) in pass receptions with 45 catches for 680 yards and five touchdowns in 1951. Received Associated Press Little ALL-America mention.

Willian S. Taylor '18 - Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Track
Inducted October 27, 1990
An extremely versatile athlete, Taylor was a member of six championship teams in three sports, including four in basketball (1914-1917). He also captained championship squads in baseball and football in 1916.

ALL-MIAA in 1977, 1978, and 1979. Leading scoring champion in 1978 (287 points, 23.9 average) and 1979 (263 points, 21.9 average). Set College records for most points (542) and field goals (233) in a season, single game scoring (42), most career field goals (660) and career points (1,619). NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

MIAA scoring champion and Most Valuable Player in 1953. Completed career holding all school scoring records, including 43 points in a single game. Set MIAA record for season scoring average of 28.3 points per game. Also three-time letter winner in tennis.

John A. Schelske '82 - Basketball

Schelske an NCAA Division III ALL-American in 1982, remains the most prolific scorer in Hornet basketball history. Schelske dominates the College record books, holding the marks for the most points in a game, season, and career. He twice reached Academic ALL-American honors and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Donald Spalsbury '39 - Basketball, Football, Golf
Inducted October 21, 1989
A three-time ALL-MIAA basketball selection. Spalsbury was a hero in a legendary three-way playoff for the league title in 1939. His steal and layup with five seconds remaining lifted the Hornets to victory over Hope en route to the MIAA crown.

Charlie Stanski '50 - Football, Basketball

First post-World War II athlete named to ALL-League teams in both football and basketball. Helped Kalamazoo to MIAA football titles in 1946 and 1948, and was named the ALL-MIAA quarterback in 1948. In basketball, he was ALL-League in 1948, and led Kalamazoo to the championship in 1950.

In football, the starting left tackle for three years. ALL-MIAA and team MVP a a senior. Starting center in basketball his sophomore and senior year. In his senior year, the third-leading scorer in the league, leading Kalamazoo to the MIAA title.

Daniel Wood '40 - Football, Basketball, Track
Inducted October 21, 1989
Wood, who led the hornets to five MIAA titles, won the league's first-ever Most valuable Player award for 1939-40. In football, he played every minute of every game for three years.

Four-time ALL-MIAA and three-time league scoring champion. Set Many school records, including all-time leading scorer (1,909 points) and most points in a season (604). Also set many MIAA records, including career scoring record of 975 points.

In tennis, her doubles team won the WMIAA championship in 1965 and 1967. Kalamazoo won three league titles while she played. In field hockey, she was the first Michigan player selected to the Great Lakes Sectional Squad. Two year captain in Basketball.

One of the founding fathers of Kalamazoo College athletics. Coached three MIAA championship football teams, including the undefeated (7-0-0) team of 1898. Captain of the 1896 football team.

Considered by some the most prolific passer in Kalamazoo College history, MacDonald earned numerous gridiron honors, including two team MVP awards, two All-MIAA first team honors, and the Burger King National Scholar Athlete Award. McDonald holds most of the Kalamazoo College passing records.

ALL-MIAA co-captain and Clark McKenzie outstanding lineman in 1950. Coached high school football teams to eight conference and one state championship. Inducted into the MHSTCA and MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 1983 and the MHSTCA Hall of Fame in 1986.

One of the outstanding players in Kalamazoo College history. Sunderland won the MIAA singles titles four times and helped the Hornets win league tennis titles four times. Along with doubles partner Vic Braden, won the league doubles title in 1949.

Physical Education Professor and men's tennis coach for 35 years. He coached his teams to 7 NCAA Division III Championships and 35 MIAA Championships. He coached 38 All-Americans, 19 MIAA MVPs, and 13 MIAA Stowe Sportsmanship Award winners. His tennis team posted a 209-1 MIAA career dual-meet record and an overall 537-231 record. He was named the Division III Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1991, and the NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade for the 1980's. He also coached football, wrestling, and cross-country.
